Low Desert Rock Supply offers CARB Clean Truck Check OBD testing performed by a CARB-Credentialed Heavy-Duty Inspection and Maintenance (HD I/M) Tester.

Our service is for qualifying OBD-equipped heavy-duty trucks with 2013 or newer diesel engines. We currently perform OBD testing only and do not offer smoke opacity testing or emissions-control equipment inspections for older non-OBD vehicles.

Testing Price

$150.00 plus all applicable taxes and fees

This price is for the Clean Truck Check OBD compliance test. Any separate CARB compliance fees, registration fees, repairs, or diagnostic work are the responsibility of the vehicle owner.

What Is CARB Clean Truck Check?

California's Clean Truck Check Program, also known as the Heavy-Duty Inspection and Maintenance or HD I/M Program, requires most affected heavy-duty vehicles operating in California to periodically demonstrate that their emissions-control systems are operating properly.

The program generally applies to diesel and other applicable heavy-duty vehicles with a GVWR greater than 14,000 lbs.

Vehicle owners are responsible for:

• Registering applicable vehicles in CARB's CTC-VIS system
• Paying the required annual CARB compliance fee
• Completing emissions testing by the vehicle's compliance deadline
• Maintaining properly functioning emissions-control equipment
• Making required repairs if a vehicle does not pass

For most affected vehicles, Clean Truck Check testing is currently required twice per year. Your specific testing deadlines can be found in your CTC-VIS account.

Failure to maintain Clean Truck Check compliance can result in CARB enforcement action and may lead to a California DMV registration hold.

OBD Testing for 2013 & Newer Diesel Engines

CARB uses an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) test for heavy-duty vehicles equipped with qualifying OBD systems, generally including diesel engines from 2013 and newer model years.

During the test, an approved testing device communicates with the vehicle's onboard computer and evaluates emissions-related OBD information.

Our Clean Truck Check service is OBD testing only.

If your vehicle requires a smoke opacity test, visual emissions-control inspection, or another type of CARB inspection, contact us before scheduling to confirm whether we can perform the required test.

Before Bringing Your Truck in for Testing

Your truck should be in proper operating condition before arriving for a Clean Truck Check test.

Your Check Engine Light Must Be Off

If the Check Engine Light or Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is illuminated, the vehicle will not pass the Clean Truck Check OBD inspection.

Do not bring a truck in for testing with an active check engine light expecting the inspection to clear or diagnose the problem. The underlying fault should be properly diagnosed and repaired before testing.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes Can Cause a Failure

A vehicle may also fail if the OBD system reports emissions-related:

• Active diagnostic trouble codes
• Permanent diagnostic trouble codes
• Malfunction Indicator Light commands
• OBD system or emissions-control problems

Clearing a code immediately before testing does not necessarily mean the truck is ready to pass.

Do Not Clear Codes Immediately Before Your Test

After diagnostic trouble codes are cleared, batteries are disconnected, or certain repairs are completed, the vehicle's OBD monitors may show as not ready.

CARB requires the OBD system to have operated sufficiently to evaluate the vehicle's emissions systems.

If the vehicle has not completed the necessary readiness criteria, it may not pass even though the check engine light is currently off.

After repairs or clearing codes, the truck may need to be driven through appropriate operating conditions before it is ready for testing.

Common Reasons a Truck May Not Pass

A Clean Truck Check OBD test may identify issues such as:

• Check Engine Light / MIL commanded on
• Active emissions-related trouble codes
• Permanent diagnostic trouble codes
• Incomplete OBD readiness
• Problems with emissions-control equipment
• OBD communication problems
• Incorrect or inconsistent emissions-system calibration information

Problems involving systems such as the DPF, SCR/DEF system, EGR system, NOx sensors, exhaust aftertreatment system, and other emissions-related components should be repaired before attempting to complete the compliance test.

Passing the Clean Truck Check is not based only on whether the dashboard light happens to be off. CARB evaluates information reported directly by the vehicle's OBD system.

After Repairs

If your truck recently had emissions-related repairs performed, make sure it has completed the necessary drive cycles and OBD readiness requirements before scheduling your test.

A recently repaired truck may need additional operating time before its onboard computer has enough information to determine whether the emissions systems are functioning correctly.

Test Results

Clean Truck Check test results are submitted electronically as required through CARB's testing system.

Vehicle owners should still monitor their CTC-VIS account to verify vehicle information, compliance deadlines, required fees, and overall compliance status.

Completing an OBD test does not replace the owner's responsibility to maintain the vehicle's CTC-VIS account or satisfy any other CARB requirements.
